The Purusha Suktam is one of the most important hymns in the Rig Veda (10.90), with versions also appearing in the Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. It describes the cosmic sacrifice of the Purusha (Cosmic Being/Supreme Person) from which the entire universe was created. It is recited in virtually all Hindu temple rituals, Yajnas, and important ceremonies. The hymn describes the origin of the four Vedas, the seasons, animals, and the cosmic order. It is one of the foundational texts of Hindu cosmology and philosophy.
