Chandra (Soma) was born from the mind of Brahma during the cosmic creation, or from the churning of the Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan) according to another tradition. He married the 27 daughters of Daksha – these are the 27 Nakshatras. However, he favored Rohini above all others, causing the remaining 26 wives to complain to their father. Daksha cursed Chandra to wane and die, but the curse was partially reversed by Shiva, resulting in the monthly waxing and waning cycle. This mythological story encodes the Moon's orbital relationship with the nakshatras – spending roughly one day in each of the 27 lunar mansions.
The Chandra Kavacham from Markandeya Purana is the primary protective hymn for the Moon. The Chandra Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names of the Moon) is recited for mental peace.
