Mangala Dosha, commonly known as Manglik Dosha, is one of the most widely discussed afflictions in Vedic astrology, particularly in the context of marriage compatibility. The dosha is named after Mangal (Mars), the fiery planet of energy, aggression, and passion.
The dosha forms when Mars occupies specific houses (1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th) from the Lagna (ascendant), Moon, or Venus. Mars in these positions is believed to create turbulence in marital life due to its aggressive, independent, and dominating energy clashing with the harmony required in partnerships.
Classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra discuss this extensively. However, many cancellation conditions exist: Mars in its own sign (Aries/Scorpio), Mars in exaltation (Capricorn), both partners being Manglik, Jupiter aspecting Mars, and more. Most astrologers check from all three reference points (Lagna, Moon, Venus) for a comprehensive assessment.
In modern practice, the severity of Mangala Dosha varies enormously. A Mars in Capricorn (exalted) in the 7th house is technically Manglik but practically strong and beneficial. Approximately 30% of all charts have some form of this dosha, making it extremely common — which means most "Manglik" charts lead perfectly normal married lives.
