The combined longitude of Sun and Moon creates 27 Yogas
A Yoga in the Panchang context is one of 27 divisions based on the sum of the Sun's and Moon's sidereal longitudes. Each Yoga spans 13°20' of this combined longitude. Unlike its namesake in physical practice, Panchang Yoga is purely astronomical — it reflects the combined energy of the two luminaries.
Yoga = floor((Sun longitude + Moon longitude) / 13.333°) + 1. The sum increases as both bodies move forward. Since the Moon moves much faster than the Sun (~13° vs ~1° per day), the sum increases by ~14° daily — roughly one Yoga per day. The 27 Yogas have varying qualities from highly auspicious (Siddha) to inauspicious (Vyaghata).
Yoga = floor((Sun° + Moon°) / 13.333°) + 1
Sum increases ~14°/day → ~1 Yoga/day
27 Yogas × 13°20' = 360°
The 27 Panchang Yogas above are daily, based on Sun+Moon angle. The yogas below form in the birth chart from specific planetary configurations — they shape the entire life trajectory.
Formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn is in own sign or exaltation in a kendra (1,4,7,10). These produce extraordinary individuals.
