यमराज, यमुना
भाई दूज यमराज और उनकी बहन यमुना की कथा पर आधारित है। यमुना ने यमराज का आरती, तिलक और भोज से स्वागत किया। प्रसन्न होकर यम ने वरदान दिया कि इस दिन बहन से तिलक पाने वाला भाई अकाल मृत्यु से मुक्त रहेगा। एक अन्य परम्परा कृष्ण-सुभद्रा मिलन से जुड़ी है।
भाई दूज भाई-बहन के पवित्र बन्धन का उत्सव है। यह दीपावली का पाँचवाँ और अन्तिम दिन है। बहन का आशीर्वाद यम को भी दूर रखने में समर्थ माना जाता है।
बहनें भाई के मस्तक पर कुमकुम, चावल और चन्दन का तिलक लगाएँ, आरती करें और दीर्घायु की कामना करें। भाई उपहार और मिठाइयाँ दें। विशेष पकवान बनाएँ।
Bhai Dooj is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya (second day of bright half of Kartik). The tilak ceremony is performed during Aparahna (afternoon) when Dwitiya Tithi prevails. Avoid Bhadra timing.
On this auspicious Kartik Shukla Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj), I pray to Lord Yama and Goddess Yamuna for the long life, good health, and prosperity of my brother. May the sacred bond between siblings be strengthened.
Both brother and sister should bathe and wear fresh clothes. The sister prepares the aarti thali with roli, akshat, diya, sweets, flowers, and coconut. Clean the puja area.
The brother sits on a clean seat (asana) facing East. The sister sits opposite him. Light the diya and invoke the blessings of Yama and Yamuna, remembering the sacred story of Yamuna hosting her brother Yama on this day.
The sister applies a tilak of roli (kumkum) on the brother's forehead using the ring finger. Then she places akshat (rice grains) on the tilak. She sprinkles flower petals on his head.
The sister performs aarti of the brother by circling the lit diya around his face in a clockwise direction. She prays for his long life and well-being while doing the aarti.
The sister feeds sweets to the brother with her own hands. The brother then gives gifts (money, clothes, or other items) to the sister as a token of love and protection.
Both siblings join hands and pray together for each other's well-being. The brother pledges to protect his sister, and the sister prays for his long and healthy life. Recite the Yama mantra for protection.

ॐ सूर्यपुत्राय विद्महे महाकालाय धीमहि। तन्नो यमः प्रचोदयात्॥

भ्रातृद्वितीया महापुण्या यमुनायमसंगमे। यमुना यमकं पूजा सर्वदुःखविनाशिनी॥
bhrātṛdvitīyā mahāpuṇyā yamunāyamasaṃgame | yamunā yamakaṃ pūjā sarvaduḥkhavināśinī ||
यह महापुण्य भ्रातृद्वितीया यमुना और यम के मिलन से प्रकट हुई — यमुना द्वारा यम की पूजा सभी दुखों का नाश करती है।
यमुना प्रार्थना
ॐ यमुनायै नमः। यमुने च कृपां कुरु भ्रातृभगिनीप्रेमवर्धिनी॥
oṃ yamunāyai namaḥ | yamune ca kṛpāṃ kuru bhrātṛbhaginīpremavardhinī ||
ॐ, यमुना को नमस्कार। हे यमुने, कृपा करो, तुम जो भाई-बहन के प्रेम को बढ़ाती हो।
Offer sweets specially prepared by the sister — traditional choices include ladoo, barfi, peda, and the brother's favorite sweets. Coconut and mishri (rock sugar) are essential accompaniments.
Bhai Dooj bestows Yama's protection upon the brother, ensuring longevity and freedom from untimely death. The sister gains merit equal to Yamuna puja. The bond between siblings is sanctified and strengthened for lifetimes.
