How the Ashta Kuta system evaluates marriage compatibility through 8 factors totalling 36 points
Gun Milan (also called Guna Milap or Ashta Kuta matching) is the traditional Vedic system for evaluating marriage compatibility between two individuals. Based on the Moon's Nakshatra at birth, 8 different factors (kutas) are scored, yielding a maximum of 36 points. This system has been the cornerstone of Hindu marriage matching for centuries, especially in North India.
Each kuta evaluates a different dimension of compatibility. The total of 36 points is not arbitrary – each kuta's maximum reflects its classical weight in predicting marital harmony.
Not all astrologers agree on exact thresholds, but the following ranges are widely accepted across North Indian traditions. A score below 18 is generally considered a mismatch, while 25+ indicates strong compatibility.
Mangal Dosha (Mars Dosha) is a separate check performed alongside Gun Milan. When Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from Lagna, Moon, or Venus, the native is considered Manglik. The classical rule is that a Manglik should marry another Manglik to neutralise the dosha. However, BPHS lists 10+ cancellation conditions – many people labelled 'Manglik' actually have their dosha cancelled.
Gun Milan is a screening tool, not the final verdict. A couple scoring 30/36 can still face challenges if their charts have severe doshas (Kaal Sarpa, Pitru Dosha) or if key houses (7th, 8th) are heavily afflicted. Conversely, a score of 20 with strong chart-level synastry can work well. Experienced astrologers always examine both charts holistically – checking the 7th house lord, Venus placement, Jupiter's aspect on the 7th, and dasha compatibility.

The 36-point Ashta Kuta system is predominantly a North Indian tradition. South Indian astrology uses a different matching system called Dasha Kuta (10 factors) or Poruttham, which includes additional checks like Rajju (longevity), Vedha (affliction), and Stree Deergha (bride's longevity from groom's star). Some factors overlap – Rashi, Nakshatra, and Gana are common to both systems – but the scoring weights differ.

Gun Milan provides a structured, quantifiable framework for evaluating marriage compatibility. While the 36-point system is powerful, it should be used as one input among several – including chart-level analysis, Mangal Dosha assessment, and dasha compatibility. No single score can capture the full complexity of two lives coming together.
