Choghadiya (Chaturghatikas) is a Vedic astrology system that divides each day and night into 8 equal parts. Each part lasts approximately 90 minutes (day slots from sunrise to sunset, night slots from sunset to next sunrise). It is one of the simplest and most popular methods of muhurta selection — widely used in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh for choosing auspicious times.
Amrit (highly auspicious) — best for all activities. Shubh (auspicious) — good for ceremonies, business, travel. Labh (profitable) — ideal for financial transactions, purchases, and trade. Char (neutral) — acceptable for travel, ordinary for other tasks. Rog (inauspicious) — indicates health issues, avoid auspicious work. Kaal (inauspicious) — signifies losses and obstacles. Udveg (inauspicious) — indicates anxiety and stress, avoid except for government work.
Day Choghadiya: the time between sunrise and sunset is divided into 8 equal parts. Night Choghadiya: sunset to next sunrise, also 8 parts. The sequence of Choghadiya types varies by weekday — it depends on the planetary lord of the day. Because sunrise and sunset vary by geographic location, Choghadiya times differ for each city.

Choghadiya (also written Chaughadia) is a traditional Vedic time-division system used to find auspicious and inauspicious time slots throughout the day and night. The word literally means "four ghatis" – each Choghadiya period spans approximately 4 ghatis (about 96 minutes). There are 8 day slots (sunrise to sunset) and 8 night slots (sunset to next sunrise), giving 16 periods in total.
Most auspicious – ideal for all good works, especially starting new ventures
Auspicious – good for marriage, religious ceremonies, and important decisions
Auspicious – excellent for business, trade, and financial transactions
Neutral – suitable for travel and movement, but not for starting permanent works
Inauspicious – associated with illness; avoid medical procedures and new health regimens
Inauspicious – ruled by Saturn; avoid important beginnings, especially financial
Inauspicious – associated with anxiety; avoid travel, meetings with officials
For travel, the Char Choghadiya is traditionally recommended as its mobile nature supports journeys. For business and financial activities, Labh (gain) and Shubh (auspicious) are preferred. The Amrit Choghadiya is considered universally auspicious for all activities. Avoid starting any important work during Rog, Kaal, or Udveg periods.
