This year Maha Navami falls on a Tuesday, 19 days later than 2025 (2025-10-01) — typical lunar-calendar drift.
Falling on a Tuesday gives the day a Mangal emphasis — courage-related rites and red offerings carry extra weight.
The 2025 observance fell on Wednesday, 2025-10-01 — this year arrives 19 days later in the Gregorian calendar, the Adhika-masa pattern when an intercalary lunar month pushes the cycle forward.
Looking ahead to 2027, Maha Navami will fall on Saturday, 2027-10-09 (11 days earlier than this year). So planning ritual schedules across years means anchoring to the tithi rather than the Gregorian date.

Maha Navami is the ninth and final day of Navaratri, the day Goddess Durga vanquished the buffalo demon Mahishasura in their epic battle. After nine nights of fierce combat, the Goddess finally slew the demon, and the next day (Vijayadashami) celebrated her victory. On this day, Durga is worshipped as Siddhidatri – the bestower of supernatural powers and perfection.
How to Observe
Perform the final Navaratri havan (sacred fire ceremony). Conduct Kanya Puja if not done on Ashtami – nine young girls representing the Navadurga are worshipped. In many traditions, a special Navami Puja is performed with recitation of the complete Durga Saptashati. In South India, Saraswati Puja is performed – books, instruments, and tools placed before the deity on Ashtami are reclaimed after Navami worship. Farewell offerings are made to Durga before Vijayadashami.
Significance
Maha Navami marks the culmination of nine days of Goddess worship and the final triumph of divine feminine power over evil. It is one of the three most auspicious days (tri-shakti) for starting new ventures, along with the two Navratri commencement days.
