This year Mohini Ekadashi falls on a Monday, 11 days earlier than 2025 (2025-05-08) — typical lunar-calendar drift.
Falling on a Monday brings a Chandra emphasis — lunar rites and milk/rice offerings carry extra weight, especially for the moon-sensitive nakshatras.
The 2025 observance fell on Thursday, 2025-05-08 — this year arrives 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar, the familiar 11-day shift of the unmodified lunar year.
Looking ahead to 2027, Mohini Ekadashi will fall on Sunday, 2027-05-16 (19 days later than this year). So planning ritual schedules across years means anchoring to the tithi rather than the Gregorian date.

When the gods and asuras churned the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan), the nectar of immortality (amrita) emerged. The asuras seized it. Vishnu, to save the gods, assumed the enchantress form Mohini — the most beautiful female form in cosmic history. The asuras, mesmerised, allowed Mohini to distribute the nectar; she gave it to the gods. This event is said to have occurred on Vaishakha Shukla Ekadashi. The Vishnu Purana and Bhagavata Purana both preserve the Mohini-avatara narrative.
How to Observe
Observe Ekadashi fast and worship Vishnu — especially the Mohini-Vishnu form. Some traditions also worship Lakshmi as the female aspect that captivates the demonic mind into surrender. Recite the Mohini Avatara katha from the Bhagavata Purana, Skandha 8. Donate sweets (madhura) — symbolic of the amrita. Observed widely in Vaishnava and Smarta traditions; in Kerala, special temple festivities mark the day.
Significance
Commemorates the cosmic event by which the gods received immortality — without Mohini's intervention, the asuras would have prevailed. The deeper teaching: dharma sometimes requires assuming unexpected forms; Vishnu's willingness to take a feminine form for the sake of cosmic balance teaches the dissolution of fixed identity in service of righteousness. Often observed by those facing situations where a creative or unexpected approach is needed.
Fasting
Ekadashi fast – no grains or beans. Sweets (symbolic of amrita) are the traditional offering. Break fast on Dwadashi morning.
