In the Mahabharata, King Janamejaya performed a great Sarpa Satra (serpent sacrifice) to avenge his father Parikshit's death by Takshaka. The sage Astika intervened and stopped the sacrifice, saving the Naga race – this event is commemorated on Nag Panchami. How to Observe
