The most complex Muhurta selection – suitable nakshatras, lagna requirements, Venus/Jupiter conditions, and seasonal restrictions
Marriage (Vivah) Muhurta is considered the most complex Muhurta to select because it must satisfy the maximum number of conditions simultaneously. Unlike a business Muhurta (where a few good factors suffice), a marriage Muhurta must check nakshatra suitability, tithi quality, karana, yoga, lagna strength, planetary positions (especially Venus and Jupiter), and seasonal restrictions – all at once.
The preferred nakshatras for marriage are those classified as Dhruva (fixed, stable) or Mridu (soft, gentle): Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttarabhadrapada, and Revati. These nakshatras confer stability, gentleness, and growth – qualities essential for a lasting marriage.
Absolutely avoided: Vishti (Bhadra) karana, Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th), Vyatipata/Vaidhriti yoga, Rahu Kaal during the ceremony. The wedding ceremony (particularly the Saptapadi/seven steps) should ideally occur during the auspicious window, not just the reception or formal registration.
Not all tithis are equally suitable. The following are considered auspicious for marriage, and the reason behind each selection reflects the lunar energy present:
Dwitiya (2nd): Ruled by Brahma. Fresh beginning energy, ideal for launching a new chapter of life.
Tritiya (3rd): Ruled by Vishnu. Balance and growth. Associated with Akshaya Tritiya – the "imperishable" tithi.
Panchami (5th): Ruled by the Moon. Intelligence and creativity. Blesses the couple with wise children.
Saptami (7th): Ruled by the Sun. Vitality and energy. The Sun's strength supports a vibrant partnership.
Dashami (10th): Ruled by Dharma. Prosperity and right action. Strong foundation for a dharmic union.
Ekadashi (11th): Ruled by Rudra. Spiritual depth. Considered highly sacred – but the Dwi-tithi rule applies.
Trayodashi (13th): Ruled by Kamadeva (god of desire). Blesses romantic harmony and attraction.
Avoided: Chaturthi (4th), Navami (9th), Chaturdashi (14th) – these are Rikta (empty) tithis associated with Yama and destructive energy. Amavasya and Purnima are also typically avoided for marriage.
Rohini (stability, beauty), Mrigashira (gentleness, seeking), Magha (ancestral blessings, royal dignity), Uttara Phalguni (patronage, lasting bonds), Hasta (skill, craftsmanship in relationships), Swati (independence with harmony), Anuradha (devotion, friendship), Uttara Ashadha (final victory, commitment), Uttarabhadrapada (depth, wisdom), Revati (nourishment, completion). Each carries a specific energy that blesses the marriage in its own way.
Strictly avoided nakshatras: Bharani (death themes), Ardra (tears, storms), Ashlesha (deceit), Jyeshtha (conflicts), Moola (destruction/uprooting). These carry energies fundamentally incompatible with the stability a marriage requires.
Beyond individual tithi/nakshatra checks, several conditions are absolute prohibitions:
Bhadra/Vishti Karana: Occurs 7 times per lunar month. Any ceremony during Vishti is inauspicious – check the exact Vishti start and end time.
Rahu Kaal: Approximately 1.5 hours daily ruled by Rahu. The Saptapadi must NOT fall within Rahu Kaal.
Venus Combustion: When Venus is within ~10 degrees of the Sun (8 degrees if retrograde), it is combust. Venus is the karaka of marriage – combustion severely weakens marital harmony.
Jupiter Combustion: Jupiter blesses the marriage with wisdom and dharma. Its combustion removes this protection.
Vyatipata/Vaidhriti Yoga: These two inauspicious yogas from the Panchang are avoided for all auspicious activities.
