जब देवी पार्वती के पिता हिमालय ने उनका विवाह विष्णु से तय किया, पार्वती विचलित हुईं क्योंकि उन्होंने केवल शिव से विवाह का संकल्प लिया था। उनकी सखी ने उन्हें हर लिया — "हरतालिका" का अर्थ है "सखी का अपहरण करने वाली"। घने वन में पार्वती ने मिट्टी का शिवलिंग बनाकर कठोर तपस्या की। शिव प्रसन्न होकर प्रकट हुए और पार्वती को पत्नी रूप में स्वीकार किया।
How to Observe
महिलाएँ भाद्रपद शुक्ल तृतीया को कठोर निर्जला व्रत रखती हैं। मिट्टी या रेत से शिव-पार्वती की मूर्ति बनाकर मध्याह्न काल में फूल, बेलपत्र और फलों से पूजा करती हैं। रात भर जागरण करती हैं। अगली सुबह मूर्तियों का विसर्जन किया जाता है।
