Doshas are astrological afflictions formed by specific inauspicious planetary configurations. Each dosha has remedies — gemstones, mantras, charity, and rituals. Important: most doshas have "cancellation" conditions that reduce or eliminate their effects.
In Vedic astrology, a Dosha (literally "fault" or "blemish") is a specific planetary configuration that creates challenges in certain areas of life. Doshas are not curses or punishments — they are karmic patterns encoded in the birth chart, indicating areas where the soul has chosen to work through specific lessons in this lifetime.
The key principle: a dosha indicates a tendency, not a certainty. Its actual manifestation depends on the overall chart strength, the dasha period running, current transits, and — crucially — the cancellation conditions that may neutralize it. A skilled astrologer always checks for cancellations before declaring a dosha active.
Classical texts emphasize that doshas exist to direct the soul's attention to specific growth areas. Mangal Dosha, for example, does not "prevent" marriage — it indicates that the person must develop patience and emotional maturity before they can sustain a harmonious partnership. The remedies work not by magically removing the dosha, but by cultivating the qualities needed to transcend it.
Furthermore, Parashari texts state that the dasha of a dosha-causing planet is when the dosha manifests most strongly. Outside that dasha, the dosha may remain largely dormant. This means timing matters as much as the dosha's existence.
When Jupiter (the Guru, teacher of the Devas) conjoins Rahu (the anti-establishment, rule-breaking shadow planet), the person's wisdom and dharmic sense becomes "polluted" by unconventional or taboo influences. This can manifest as disrespect for traditions, association with dubious gurus, making wrong moral choices despite knowing better, or being deceived in matters of faith and education.
Kemadruma Dosha forms when no planet (excluding Sun, Rahu, Ketu) occupies the 2nd or 12th house from the Moon. The Moon, representing the mind and emotions, needs planetary "companions" in adjacent houses for emotional stability and social support. Without them, the native may experience emotional isolation, poverty despite effort, lack of support systems, and mental distress.
