This year Kamika Ekadashi falls on a Saturday, 10 days earlier than 2026 (2026-09-07) — typical lunar-calendar drift.
Falling on a Saturday brings a Shani emphasis — ancestral rites and black-sesame offerings carry extra weight, mitigating Shani's shadow.
The 2026 observance fell on Monday, 2026-09-07 — this year arrives 10 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar, the familiar 11-day shift of the unmodified lunar year.
Looking ahead to 2028, Kamika Ekadashi will fall on Wednesday, 2028-08-16 (11 days earlier than this year). So planning ritual schedules across years means anchoring to the tithi rather than the Gregorian date.
Astronomical context for Kamika Ekadashi 2027

For Kamika Ekadashi 2027, the central rite of udaya tithi (sunrise) depends on the festival tithi being present during that window on 2027-08-28 — confirmed across 6 reference cities in this year's computation pass. Cities further east (Kolkata, Chennai) see the window open ~15-25 minutes before Delhi; cities west of Delhi (Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore) see it start later by a similar margin.

A kshatriya killed a brahmana in a temple dispute. Burdened by the gravest of sins (brahmahatya), he approached Sage Vasishtha for relief. Vasishtha told him: "The Shravana Krishna Ekadashi vrata, even more than any tirtha pilgrimage, removes brahmahatya." The kshatriya observed it faithfully and was freed from his guilt. The Bhavishyottara Purana preserves this teaching, with Krishna telling Yudhishthira: "Yudhishthira, even worship of Ganga, Banaras, and Pushkara combined gives less merit than Kamika Ekadashi."
How to Observe
Observe Ekadashi fast. Worship Vishnu with tulsi — especially significant on Kamika as tulsi-worship is said to be most fruitful on this day. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and the Kamika-mahatmya from the Bhavishyottara Purana. The vrata is specifically observed for the removal of grave sins, including those committed unknowingly. Light a ghee lamp before Vishnu through the night.
Significance
Kamika = "fulfiller of desires" — but specifically the desire for purification from heavy karma. Ranked in classical sources among the most powerful purificatory ekadashis, said to exceed even great tirtha-yatras in merit. Especially observed during Shravana (the most spiritually charged month) and by those who have committed wrongs they cannot directly undo. The tulsi-puja emphasis connects this ekadashi to the broader Shravana-month worship culture.
Fasting
Ekadashi fast – no grains or beans. Tulsi worship throughout the day is the distinguishing feature. Break fast on Dwadashi morning.
