This year Papamochani Ekadashi falls on a Sunday, 19 days later than 2026 (2026-04-13) — typical lunar-calendar drift.
Falling on a Sunday gives the day a Surya emphasis — Sun-ruled rites and copper offerings carry extra weight.
The 2026 observance fell on Monday, 2026-04-13 — this year arrives 19 days later in the Gregorian calendar, the Adhika-masa pattern when an intercalary lunar month pushes the cycle forward.
Looking ahead to 2028, Papamochani Ekadashi will fall on Thursday, 2028-04-20 (11 days earlier than this year). So planning ritual schedules across years means anchoring to the tithi rather than the Gregorian date.

For Papamochani Ekadashi 2027, the central rite of udaya tithi (sunrise) depends on the festival tithi being present during that window on 2027-05-02 — confirmed across 6 reference cities in this year's computation pass. Cities further east (Kolkata, Chennai) see the window open ~15-25 minutes before Delhi; cities west of Delhi (Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore) see it start later by a similar margin.

In the Chaitra forest, the sage Medhavi performed tapas. The apsara Manjughosha attempted to seduce him on Indra's orders. Medhavi resisted but was distracted; broken from his austerity, he cursed Manjughosha into a pishachi form. Realising her transgression, Manjughosha sought atonement. Sage Chyavana taught her to observe Chaitra Krishna Ekadashi. She did so with utmost sincerity; the curse lifted and she returned to her celestial form. The Bhavishyottara Purana preserves this account.
How to Observe
Observe Ekadashi fast with sincere repentance for past wrongs. Confess past mistakes inwardly to Vishnu and resolve not to repeat them. Worship Vishnu with white flowers and tulsi. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and the Hari Stotra. Donate to those wronged by one's past actions, where possible. The vrata is specifically a "prayaschitta" (atonement) observance — different from a request-for-boon vrata.
Significance
Papamochani = "sin-releasing" — directly addresses the karmic burden of wrongdoing. The Manjughosha story's deeper message: even when transgression is committed, sincere repentance and observance can release the soul. Especially observed by those approaching death, by those who have caused harm and wish to make amends, and at the close of the lunar year (Chaitra Krishna being just before the new-year transition). One of the most cathartic ekadashis.
Fasting
Ekadashi fast – no grains or beans. Sincere inward repentance is the essential element. Break fast on Dwadashi morning.
