This year Papankusha Ekadashi falls on a Monday, 11 days earlier than 2026 (2026-10-22) — typical lunar-calendar drift.
Falling on a Monday brings a Chandra emphasis — lunar rites and milk/rice offerings carry extra weight, especially for the moon-sensitive nakshatras.
The 2026 observance fell on Thursday, 2026-10-22 — this year arrives 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar, the familiar 11-day shift of the unmodified lunar year.
Looking ahead to 2028, Papankusha Ekadashi will fall on Friday, 2028-09-29 (11 days earlier than this year). So planning ritual schedules across years means anchoring to the tithi rather than the Gregorian date.
Astronomical context for Papankusha Ekadashi 2027
On Monday, October 11, 2027, sunrise in Delhi (the reference city for this page) falls at 06:19 IST and sunset at 17:56 IST — a daylight span of 11h 37m. Across the six pan-Indian cities tabulated below, sunrise on this date varies from 05:31 (Kolkata) at the eastern edge to 06:31 (Mumbai) in the west — a 60-minute difference that drives the city-by-city muhurat shift you see in the table.
For Papankusha Ekadashi 2027, the central rite of udaya tithi (sunrise) depends on the festival tithi being present during that window on 2027-10-11 — confirmed across 6 reference cities in this year's computation pass. Cities further east (Kolkata, Chennai) see the window open ~15-25 minutes before Delhi; cities west of Delhi (Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore) see it start later by a similar margin.

A cruel hunter named Krodhana spent his life in violence and theft. As death approached he was terrified of Yama's punishments. He fled to the hermitage of Sage Angira who took pity on him. Angira taught him that even a single observance of the Ashwina Shukla Ekadashi vrata can serve as an "ankusha" (elephant goad / steering hook) to redirect the karmic course of sin. Krodhana observed and died with peace; Yama's messengers did not collect him — Vishnu's envoys did, taking him to Vaikuntha. The Padma Purana preserves this dramatic teaching.
How to Observe
Observe Ekadashi fast even if you have only one to observe in your life. Worship Vishnu with sincere repentance and the resolve "no more wrong action from this day." Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and the Krodhana katha. Especially recommended for those approaching the end of life, those who have lived violently and wish to redirect, and those with terminal diagnoses. Donate to hospices and the dying.
Significance
Papankusha = "sin-controlling goad" — the imagery is of a mahout (elephant-driver) using a small goad to redirect a massive elephant. Even one observance, the vrata teaches, can redirect a lifetime of karma. This is the "last-chance ekadashi" in Vaishnava theology — even hardened sinners on their deathbed can be saved. A favourite of bhakti movements emphasising grace over works. Observed widely by Vaishnava elderly preparing for transition.
Fasting
Ekadashi fast – no grains or beans. Even one sincere observance in a lifetime carries the merit of the vrata. Break fast on Dwadashi morning.
