This year Safala Ekadashi falls on a Tuesday, 19 days later than 2026 (2026-01-14) — typical lunar-calendar drift.
Falling on a Tuesday gives the day a Mangal emphasis — courage-related rites and red offerings carry extra weight.
The 2026 observance fell on Wednesday, 2026-01-14 — this year arrives 19 days later in the Gregorian calendar, the Adhika-masa pattern when an intercalary lunar month pushes the cycle forward.
Looking ahead to 2028, Safala Ekadashi will fall on Saturday, 2028-01-22 (11 days earlier than this year). So planning ritual schedules across years means anchoring to the tithi rather than the Gregorian date.

A king named Mahishmat had five sons; the eldest, Lumpaka, lived an immoral and violent life and was banished to the forest. Wretched and starving, he found shelter on a Pausha Krishna Ekadashi day, accidentally fasted without food, and stayed awake all night in a Vishnu temple. This unwitting observance purified him completely — he returned home, was reconciled with his family, and ruled wisely. Krishna narrates this Padma Purana story to Yudhishthira to illustrate that even unintentional observance grants merit.
How to Observe
Observe Ekadashi fast and stay vigilant through the night in Vishnu remembrance (jagaran) — the unwitting jagaran was Lumpaka's purifying act. Offer fruits, especially seasonal winter fruits, to Vishnu. Recite the Lumpaka katha from the Padma Purana. Donate to those who are estranged or homeless — embodying the spirit of giving shelter as Lumpaka was given.
Significance
Safala = "fruitful" — grants success in all endeavours, particularly to those starting over after failure or estrangement. The Lumpaka story is the classical answer to "what if I cannot observe perfectly?" — sincere intention and accidental observance still carry merit. A favourite of those undertaking new ventures, recovering from setbacks, or seeking reconciliation in family relationships.
Fasting
Ekadashi fast – no grains or beans. Stay awake (jagaran) through Ekadashi night. Break fast on Dwadashi morning.
