Kala Sarpa Yoga is one of the most feared combinations in Vedic astrology, formed when all seven visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are hemmed between the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu. The name translates to "Serpent of Time" — evoking the image of a cosmic snake swallowing all planetary energies.
There are 12 types of Kala Sarpa depending on the Rahu-Ketu axis: Ananta, Kulika, Vasuki, Shankhapala, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshaka, Karkotaka, Shankhachuda, Ghataka, Vishadhar, and Sheshanaga. Each type affects different life areas based on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy.
Classical texts debate whether Kala Sarpa is a true yoga or a modern interpolation. It does not appear in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or Phaladeepika. However, its effects are widely observed in practice: karmic intensity, sudden reversals of fortune, obstacles that dissolve suddenly, and a life that feels "fated" rather than freely chosen.
Approximately 15% of charts have Kala Sarpa. Its severity depends on the strength of Rahu/Ketu, their house placement, and whether any planet is conjunct either node. A strong Jupiter aspecting the axis significantly mitigates the dosha. Many successful leaders and spiritual figures have Kala Sarpa — it is not a death sentence but an indicator of a karmically intense life.
Karmic Intensity
Life feels fated rather than freely chosen. Sudden reversals, both positive and negative. Past-life karma strongly influences present circumstances.
Obstacles & Delays
Repeated obstacles in career, relationships, and health. Progress comes in sudden bursts after long stagnation periods.
Spiritual Growth
Often accelerates spiritual development through suffering. Many spiritual leaders have this yoga. Deep interest in mysticism, past lives, and metaphysics.
Individuals with Kala Sarpa Yoga often experience a life marked by intense karmic lessons, where progress in career or relationships tends to come after periods of significant struggle and delay. They may feel a strong sense of destiny or being 'fated', navigating sudden reversals of fortune that can be both challenging and transformative. This often fosters a deep, albeit sometimes painful, journey towards spiritual understanding and a profound interest in life's deeper mysteries.
The effects of Kala Sarpa Yoga typically manifest most strongly during the dasha and antardasha periods of Rahu, Ketu, or the planets most closely associated with the Rahu-Ketu axis.
