What Is the Difference Between Sidereal and Tropical Zodiac?
The tropical zodiac (used in Western astrology) fixes 0° Aries at the vernal equinox — the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator in March. The sidereal zodiac (used in Vedic astrology, also called Nirayana) fixes 0° Aries against the actual fixed stars. Both systems divide the ecliptic into twelve 30° signs. The difference between them is a slow drift called ayanamsha.
Because of the Earth's axial precession (a ~26,000-year wobble), the equinox point moves backwards through the constellations by about 50 arcseconds per year — roughly 1° every 72 years. When the two systems last aligned (around 285 CE), a tropical Aries and a sidereal Aries pointed at the same patch of sky. Today, ~1,700 years later, the tropical zodiac is running roughly 24° ahead of the sidereal zodiac (per Lahiri, the Indian government's official ayanamsha).
Practical Effect On Your Chart
A 24° shift means that for most people, their sidereal Sun sign is one sign earlier than their tropical Sun sign. A person born on 20 September may be a tropical Virgo but a sidereal Leo — the Sun's position against the stars was still in Leo even though the calendar-based tropical system already labelled it Virgo. The same shift applies to the Moon, the ascendant, and every planet.
The two systems are not two answers to the same question — they measure different things. Tropical astrology tracks the Sun's seasonal position (angle relative to the equator); sidereal astrology tracks the Sun's stellar position (angle relative to the fixed stars). Neither is “wrong” — but Vedic astrology's predictive techniques (dashas, transits, muhurtas, nakshatras) were built for the sidereal frame, and Western astrology's psychological interpretation was built for the tropical frame. Mixing them tends to break both.

Which Ayanamsha Does Vedic Astrology Use?
Modern Vedic astrologers use several ayanamsha systems. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the Indian government standard and the default across most modern Vedic software including Dekho Panchang. Other systems include Raman (used by B.V. Raman school), Krishnamurti (KP) (used in KP astrology), Yukteshwar (Sri Yukteshwar's 24° figure), Fagan-Bradley (Western sidereal), and True Chitra. Is Vedic Astrology “More Accurate”?
Neither system is empirically “more accurate” — they answer different questions. Vedic astrology's alignment with the visible night sky is closer to what ancient sky-watchers actually observed; if you point a telescope at the Sun on 15 May and check which constellation it's in, the sidereal Taurus label matches what you see. Tropical astrology's alignment with the seasons is what mattered for agricultural calendars; the Sun entering tropical Aries always marks the start of northern-hemisphere spring, regardless of stellar drift. Choose the frame whose predictive tradition you actually want to use.
