होलिका दहन दैत्य बहन होलिका के दग्ध होने की स्मृति है। हिरण्यकशिपु की बहन होलिका को अग्नि से सुरक्षा का वरदान था। उसने प्रह्लाद को गोद में लेकर चिता पर बैठी, पर वरदान अकेले बैठने पर ही काम करता था — होलिका जल गई और प्रह्लाद अपनी अटल भक्ति से सुरक्षित बच गया।
How to Observe
फाल्गुन पूर्णिमा को सूर्यास्त बाद शुभ मुहूर्त में सार्वजनिक स्थान पर विशाल अलाव जलाया जाता है। भक्त अग्नि की परिक्रमा करते हैं, नारियल, अनाज और लावा अग्नि में अर्पित करते हैं। पवित्र अग्नि की राख माथे पर लगाते हैं।
Significance
होलिका दहन भक्ति की आसुरी शक्ति पर और सत्य की असत्य पर विजय का प्रतीक है। पवित्र अग्नि वातावरण को शुद्ध करती है। यह होली की पूर्व संध्या पर मनाया जाता है।
