Long ago the demon Mura tormented the worlds. He could not be killed by any weapon. When Vishnu engaged him in battle, He was forced to retreat to a cave called Badarikashrama and slept exhausted. Mura entered the cave to kill Him in sleep. At that moment, a goddess emerged from Vishnu's body — radiant, armed, and fierce — and slew Mura instantly. She is "Ekadashi" personified — born from the eleventh principle of Vishnu. The eleventh day of every fortnight bears her name in gratitude. The Padma Purana preserves this origin story.
How to Observe
