This year Utpanna Ekadashi falls on a Monday, 10 days earlier than 2027 (2027-11-24) — typical lunar-calendar drift.
Falling on a Monday brings a Chandra emphasis — lunar rites and milk/rice offerings carry extra weight, especially for the moon-sensitive nakshatras.
The 2027 observance fell on Wednesday, 2027-11-24 — this year arrives 10 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar, the familiar 11-day shift of the unmodified lunar year.
Looking ahead to 2029, Utpanna Ekadashi will fall on Sunday, 2029-12-02 (19 days later than this year). So planning ritual schedules across years means anchoring to the tithi rather than the Gregorian date.
Astronomical context for Utpanna Ekadashi 2028
On Monday, November 13, 2028, sunrise in Delhi (the reference city for this page) falls at 06:42 IST and sunset at 17:28 IST — a daylight span of 10h 46m. Across the six pan-Indian cities tabulated below, sunrise on this date varies from 05:48 (Kolkata) at the eastern edge to 06:44 (Mumbai) in the west — a 56-minute difference that drives the city-by-city muhurat shift you see in the table.
For Utpanna Ekadashi 2028, the central rite of udaya tithi (sunrise) depends on the festival tithi being present during that window on 2028-11-13 — confirmed across 6 reference cities in this year's computation pass. Cities further east (Kolkata, Chennai) see the window open ~15-25 minutes before Delhi; cities west of Delhi (Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore) see it start later by a similar margin.

Utpanna Ekadashi follows the Udaya Tithi rule – the festival is observed on the day when the required tithi prevails at sunrise. This is the default Dharmasindhu convention for festivals without a special time-window requirement.

Long ago the demon Mura tormented the worlds. He could not be killed by any weapon. When Vishnu engaged him in battle, He was forced to retreat to a cave called Badarikashrama and slept exhausted. Mura entered the cave to kill Him in sleep. At that moment, a goddess emerged from Vishnu's body — radiant, armed, and fierce — and slew Mura instantly. She is "Ekadashi" personified — born from the eleventh principle of Vishnu. The eleventh day of every fortnight bears her name in gratitude. The Padma Purana preserves this origin story.
How to Observe
Observe Ekadashi fast — this is the foundational vrata, the "origin" ekadashi from which all others derive. Worship the goddess Ekadashi (a manifestation of Vishnu's shakti) alongside Vishnu. Recite the Mura-vadha katha from the Padma Purana. Especially important to observe with full discipline — those who maintain the Utpanna observance are said to maintain all subsequent ekadashis through the year. New ekadashi-observers traditionally begin their practice on this day.
Significance
The "mother of all ekadashis" — the foundational vrata that gave name and form to the eleventh-day observance. The Mura story teaches that even when Vishnu (the soul) is overcome by exhaustion, the shakti (energy) emergent from Him fights for the devotee. The vrata is the canonical beginner's ekadashi — observed by anyone starting the practice of fortnightly fasting. Traditional families teach children the meaning of Ekadashi on this day. Has special significance for sadhakas pursuing shakti-oriented practices.
Fasting
Ekadashi fast – no grains or beans. The "first" ekadashi — beginners traditionally start their lifetime vrata-practice on this day. Break fast on Dwadashi morning.
