दैत्य राजा हिरण्यकशिपु ने अपने पुत्र प्रह्लाद को विष्णु की भक्ति के लिए मारने का प्रयास किया। उसकी बहन होलिका, जिसे अग्नि से प्रतिरक्षा का वरदान था, प्रह्लाद को गोद में लेकर अग्नि में बैठी। पर वरदान केवल अकेले बैठने पर काम करता था — होलिका जल गई और प्रह्लाद बच गया।
