देवी पार्वती ने चन्दन के लेप से गणेश की रचना की और उनमें प्राण फूँके। जब शिव लौटे, गणेश ने उन्हें रोका। शिव ने क्रोध में उनका सिर काट दिया। पार्वती को शान्त करने के लिए शिव ने हाथी का सिर लगाया।
